When I first visited this park I had no idea what it was. Sis and I were on the ferry coming back from Liberty Island when I saw this super cool eagle statue and decided that I wanted to go there.

Even though I roamed the park, looking at the statues and the memorial walls, I didn’t find out what it was a memorial for. In fact, I had no idea until about an hour ago, when I used my Google-fu to find out.
It turns out that this is the East Coast Memorial, which “commemorates U.S. servicemen who died in coastal waters of the western Atlantic Ocean during World War II”. The granite walls where the names are carved are 19 feet tall, giving you an impression of the magnitude of what you’re looking at.

When I travel I have a tendency to go towards Art. If I see a cool sculpture or painting I go for it. And sometimes in doing that I discover a place that I had no idea existed.
